Condoms

A new season of The Slut Show is here! With a new guest every week we are changing things up. This second season is all about diversity and inclusivity and I am beyond excited to be talking to people of all kinds of different genders, sexualities, sizes and skin colors. Starting off with an episode made with my gay best friend discussing sheats, rubber, armor, skins, Jimmies and Johnnies - we are talking condoms.

Condoms are the oldest form of barrier contraception used by people with dicks. Even though there is no concrete evidence to support this theory, it has been suggested that the ancient Egyptians were among the first to wear a thing similar to what we now call the condom. 

In 1664 the earliest description of the condom was made by Italian anatomist Gabriello Fallopio. He tested it on 1100 men. He did not intend it to be a contraceptive. As a matter of fact, it was found initially to protect men against syphilis. None of the men from the trial became infected.

Condoms are air- and watertight. The smallest microorganism transmitting a sexually transmitted disease is the herpes virus and since that is about 1000 times larger than air or water molecules, condoms prevent the spread of STDs. Therefore the condom became an important measure in preventing the spread of AIDS 

But far before that in 1706 the word condom for the first time ever appeared in print, namely in a poem.

The precursor of our current condoms were made from animal intestines of sheep, calves and goats. They are still produced and are known as skin condoms.

The introduction of liquid latex in the mid 1930s made condoms not only more elastic, but also longer preservable. 

The first ever lubricated condom was introduced in the 1950s.

The standard condom we now know is made from latex. To make the latex more soft and pliable, manufacturers use an animal substance called casein, which is a milk protein. Therefore the average condom is not vegan.
